The Saint Andrew’s, Bloemfontein, 1st squash team finished a very creditable fourth in the annual Top Schools Tournament in Pietermaritzburg on the weekend.
The event brought together the champion schools of the different provinces of South Africa.
On Friday, Saints opened with a convincing 6-0 victory over Paarl Boys High and then upset KES 4-2 to put themselves in with a good shot at qualifying for the top four.
The following day, however, Saints fell 2-4 to Grey High. They had, nonetheless, done enough to secure that sought-after top four spot.
That meant a clash with the top ranked team, Selborne, and the East London school confirmed their standing with a 6-0 victory.
Saint Andrew’s then took on Rondebosch on Sunday in the playoff for third and fourth. Although it was, like the Selborne tie, a hard-fought showdown, none of the matches went Saints’ way as Rondebosch came away with a 6-0 victory and third place.
On a positive note, five of the six Saint Andrew’s 1st team players will still be in school next year, thus giving the team rare depth and experience.
Well done to the side on a strong effort!
