Alida van der Merwe, a Grade 10 learner at Eunice High School, won the silver medal at the Modern Pentathlon African Championships and Olympic Qualifier, held in Cairo, Egypt, on 23 February.

Modern Pentathlon consist of Swimming, Lazer Run (a shooting and running part), Fencing and Show Jumping. The gold and bronze medals both went to Egypt.

The gold medallist was Haydi Morse, who competed in the Modern Pentathlon for Egypt at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Alida also took part in the first World Cup of the season from the 27th February untill 3 March, where she made the final.

This will earn her PWR points, as will any of the other World Cup Events. In order to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games pentathletes need to win their continental qualifier or earn enough PWR points through partipation in World Cups to be considered by SASCOC for the team to the Olympic Games.

Another qualifier event will take place from 2 – 6 May in Bulgaria.
