The 2019 instalment of the annual Nedbank Grey College Soccer tournament got underway with the much-anticipated team draw revealing which of SA’s top school soccer teams will match up against each other in the first round of the prestigious knockout tournament.

This is the 14th year that the prestigious four-day festival of school soccer will take place at the Windmill Park fields of Grey College in Bloemfontein, and the seventh in which Nedbank returns as title sponsor of the exciting event. This year, the soccer action takes place over four days between 21 -24 September 2019.

Over the years, the tournament has not just become a highlight of the South African schools soccer calendar, but has also grown into a significant opportunity for some of the country’s best young soccer stars to showcase their skills in the hope of being snapped up by one of the many scouts from various PSL teams, and even the national youth squad, who closely watch the action.

According to Tutu Skosana, Football Sponsorships Manager for Nedbank Group, the bank’s sponsorship of the Nedbank Grey College Soccer Tournament is a key component of its wellestablished support of soccer, and more importantly, soccer development in South Africa.

“Our sponsorship of this schools tournament not only aligns with our extensive support of amateur and professional sports development in SA,” Skosana explains, “but it also demonstrates our commitment to going beyond banking by delivering on our purpose to use our financial expertise do good for individuals, families, businesses and communities.”

Skosana points out that the bank’s involvement in the Nedbank Grey College Soccer Tournament has allowed it to deliver support of soccer development in the country on three vital levels.

“For many soccer players, participating in the prestigious Nedbank Cup is a pinnacle of their soccer achievement,” he says, “and through our Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search initiative, and our involvement in this Grey College Tournament, we are paving the way for the country’s best and brightest young talent to plot a course to the ultimate achievement of their soccer dreams.”

The 2019 tournament will once again see the extended field of 24 teams battling it out for the top honour and the grand prize of a R25 000 cheque for its school, courtesy of Nedbank.
