St Andrew’s schoolboy Joshua Lawrence captured a gold medal at the 10th World Martial Arts Games in Johannesburg on the weekend, competing in the kumite for the under-14 to under-17 age group.
Last year, he won a bronze medal for Kobudo (weapons) at the Okinawa Open in Japan, where he was the only South African to make it onto the podium.
The support for the home team in Johannesburg was fantastic, he said. “Stepping onto the floor for your country is really amazing. I can’t explain it. Especially when you step onto the podium to get your medal, it is really mind-blowing.”
