Three Saint Andrew’s rugby teams exhibited remarkable improvements on their way to capturing three Bloemfontein B-League rugby titles at the University of the Free State on 12 August.

Saints’ run of success began with their under-15 A team, which recorded a convincing 39-10 victory over Brandfort after having edged the same team 23-19 earlier in the season.

There was an astonishing turnaround for the school’s 2nd XV, which took on Reddersburg in their league final. Earlier in the season the sides had met in Reddersburg, with the hosts running out 50-0 winners and the match being stopped early. This time, however, Saint Andrew’s were up for the challenge and, even though the result was a close one, came away deserved 33-31 victors.

The Saints’ 1st XV, which has hit its straps in the second half of the season, qualified fourth on the log, which secured it a semi-final showdown with Reddersburg, the team on top of the standings. Reddersburg had scored a comfortable 31-12 win in the first meeting between the schools and it appeared they would crush Saint Andrew’s when they exploded into a 21-0 lead only seven minutes into the contest. Digging deep, Saints fought their way back into the game and eventually emerged 38-35 winners.

Thus, when they found themselves 11-21 down to Brandfort, at half-time of the league final, Saint Andrew’s did not panic. They came out of the break reenergised and took the game to the opposition, scoring 29 unanswered points to romp to a 40-21 victory and the league title. Brandfort had beaten Saints 13-12 early in the season.
